Just Kids by Patti Smith

I just finished reading Patti Smith's autobiography / biography Just Kids today.
It's a story about her and her lover Robert, who eventually realizes he is gay, and their journey through life as artists. Written last year in May 2010, Patti delivers this piece masterfully. Her writing goes beyond record keeping, she describes every detail and feeling and moment so eloquently. Her thoughts are so clear making it easy for the reader to relate to her struggle as an artist.

Patti's life in New York City was dodgy as she describes going without food for days, job hunting door to door even at the stores she couldn't picture herself working. Long winters with abrupt heating in the day and laying awake writing because she couldn't sleep in the freezing at night. Drawing and writing willingly sacrificing meals for art supplies.

Just Kids is optimistic through out the book, there is no impression of bitterness apparent in the book and her story tells me that my life's journey has barely scraped the surface.

Just West of Reykavik, Iceland is the Atlantic Ocean... and tons of unfinished projects. Since the economy downfall in 2009 Iceland has temporarily put a halt on all the construction around the city due to budgets and lack of funding.

Talking to my friends about their experiences in time was totally different once I made them visually and abstractly express their memories and feelings with painting and drawing. Everyone speaks from their hearts, sometimes I believe that everyone is disconnected from their feelings, without feelings how can there be emotion? I realized how limited and almost trapped their minds were. One friend, I felt was hopeless. I showed her John cage's 4:33 song and she couldn't understand that it is music let alone express music without musical notation. She was stubborn but eventually began a journey.

The idea behind my packaging is the benign cage society has us bound by. In this case it is something visible. More importantly to show time and also to demonstrate the struggle of control. The ability to loose control is not exercised enough, although control of emotions can be helpful sometimes, usually when dealing with strong irrational hateful emotions. It's hard to say what emotion is beneficial or not, everything comes and goes as a cycle of positive and negative. Suspending the minds and repressing feelings, inside is a vision of how we experience time with the struggle to live, smile, remember and express.

Olga Mezhibulvskaya's Visual Music pushed me to see the relation between music and photographs. I chose to do Bjork's "Oceania" in the end since I was running out of time... We had the entire semester to work on this, but I was being indecisive... I had three weeks to work on this since I was jumping from one song to another this semester. Visual Music was by far one of the coolest assignments I have worked on.
The result a fifty page post card set, heavy weight pages, monochromatic inverted masked images with Dublex and Blur type making up the typographic composition. Jessica Kim and Aude were my models, I painted their bodies and photographed them. Converted the jpegs to RAW and proceded in photoshop.

I am making a brochure for Olga Mezhibulvskaya's Typography design. Jan Tschichold is a Swiss born German designer from the 1930's. He is the reason why we design the way we do today. In other words, he pushed his theories about the Russian constructivist movement and painting elements and applied them to his asymmetrical design. He did not believe one design was better than another, but he kept switching from modernism to classicism throughout his life.

After hearing a rant about why I should use a blog and how beneficial it is as a graphic designer to update twitters and facebook for about 20 minutes from Adrian (hipster hitler) I decided to log in and update my blog for fear of being lectured again on this media related topic.
One of the most recent works I have done was done digitally, here is my poem I wrote after some ludicrous endeavor, so to speak, with... life.

Exiled as a form of punishment.
As if it were a crime.
I said those words and still unsettlement.
Ten pennies over a dime.

She said it was unfortunate
And that things won't be the same.
But all I have is no regret,
Yet I will take the blame.

Talk, bark, make noise with them
And curse and slander me.

This is the guy that used to wear combat boots and black tape around his arms, he goes by "Nick-NII CH Oh LAS"

Here it is, this is the sculpture that made its way into the Foundation (painting) exhibit. There is not one drop of paint in this work and it was the only non painting in the show, and I surprisingly got honorable mention for this and a $100 gift check to DaVinci's Art supplies. It's nice to end the year with a small bang, and with some cash in these tough times. Photo credits goto Monica EunJi Kim.

School is done and I'm currently in Dyker park in Brooklyn, I just like to say that, I'm actually in Bath beach close to the Verazzano bridge and Brighton beach.

I dont know why I didn't get a photo of this show, but Yayoi Kasuma is incredible and she's at the Gagosian on 24th St. amazing.

Hi I am Trisha, I'm 21 and I goto SVA. I've been told that you have to try everything at least once in life, and so I am. Here is my first oil painting, I enjoyed this piece immensely even though I did not create this image. Actually I got it out of flaunt magazine. The professor assigned us a color theory class assignment, we had to replicate the colors of the picture we chose. It's incredible how much you can learn just by doing. I'm working on another oil painting larger than this one. I'm stoked to see how it comes out.

I am currently in the process of creating a zine that I can hand out and mail to people to promote the works of Peace Love Unity Art aka Trisha Rae Draw's work. My hommie from Cbass high gave me a lot of helpful advice and suggestions on how to make my zine and also how to find a creative curator. Not to mention the artist magnifico who I still have yet to meet, Andrew Hem, gave me a much appreciated long winded email with some gallery listings at the end. I feel confident going into this with no strings attached and creating a zine that will be at least 50 pages front and back because I have great people around to apprentice.

SVA: School of Visual Arts

I'm finally here working, eating, being a studio rat, and just livin' it up in New York City. There's a lot of work every week and it's just what I need to keep growing. Being away from home, especially in Manhattan NYC is the best choice I've ever made yet. Actually my fellow photographer artist homo-lover friend Josh May is partially responsible for my being here at SVA. I'm lucky to have such powerful influences in my life and to have the will power to peal away from my comfort zone.

I love how there are always more places to discover and people to meet. My favorite part about living here is walking around because you get to look at so many different things like buildings above or at dogs being dragged.

So this is my first entry, I will post more works as the year goes on.
